Elsewhere the needs are similarly straightforward: salt tolerance, drought tolerance, flood tolerance and greater nutrition for staple crops. Of the big agronomic breeding challenges, only herbicide tolerance is a challenge novel to contemporary times. At the grandest scale, achieving the efficiency of photosynthesis in crops like corn and sugarcane for any crop and nitrogen fixation for any crop seem to verge on science fiction for their ambition, it remains the case that those dreams merely involve moving what nature already does into a wider range of crops.

Edible seeds can be added in any food item as an ingredient or a garnish. It can be added in dosa batter or while preparing the chapathi dough. A handful of these seeds could be sprinkled on top of a bowl of fresh salad as well. One can quench the hunger pangs by snacking on roasted or sprout seeds. Pumpkin and flax seeds can prevent obesity and are excellent to maintain the health of heart. Chia seeds can be added in salads and in juice or shakes by soaking them in water. It can also be added in cakes instead of eggs, as chia seeds are an excellent binding agent.

Add the butter and heat until it melts and starts to gently foam. Add the chopped chestnuts. Season with a sprinkle of salt and gently fry for 4-5 minutes. Turn frequently until they start to smell fragrant and nutty. Add the sliced garlic and the sage leaves.

To deep fry hulled seeds, allow 1/4 cup cooking oil for every cup of seeds. Fry at 250 degrees Fahrenheit until seeds are golden brown. Drain on absorbent paper and store, tightly covered.

The seedless melons sure are easier to eat and cut up for fruit salads. But they somehow don’t taste the way they did when seed-spitting contests were the highlights of our summers.
