“Follow-up research is needed to determine intake rates of sunflower seed products in humans and animals, to inform exposure assessments and to better understand the role of sunflower seeds and cakes as a dietary aflatoxin source,” he adds.

The family’s flower business relied on the San Francisco market, and they lost roughly 25 percent of their customers by the mid-1990s because of the AIDS crisis. California flower growers were also becoming crowded out by foreign competition.

“Giant pumpkins have been grown for over a century, but Howard Dill really took it to the next level,” he explained. “In the early 20th century, pumpkin contests were pretty common, especially through Europe and here in the U.S., but then they kind of dropped off from the 1930s to the 1950s, when Howard Dill resurrected the form. He’s now considered to be the modern father of these giant pumpkins.”

What’s striking here is that the idea of breeding cotton for edible cottonseed wasn’t some gee whiz inspiration of the biotech era; this is a project going back 70 years.
