“I was fortunate enough to be able to partner with some people in the industry that gave us a leg up. One company was particularly helpful to us,” Scott remarks.

Geddes says he planted the seeds for the giant pumpkin back in April of this year, and by the time the pumpkin was ready to be harvested, the plant—which bore only one fruit— extended across 1,300 square feet. Geddes described the leaves of the mature plant as “elephant-ear sized.”

Climate change and a growing, increasingly well-fed population pose novel challenges every day. It’s a bit of a paradox that meeting those challenges so often involves solving problems that have been with us for a long, long time.

“There is an addictive side just watching it grow,” Geddes said. “Part of it is you are a curious person, and you wonder how big it can get, and if you have a competitive personality you might think you can do better next year. That happens every year.”

These nuts come from the Bertholletia excelsa tree, which is native to the Amazon rainforest, and can live for more than 500 years. The outer casing of the nut is so hard that only one animal, the agouti (a type of rodent) is capable of cracking it–meaning that humans have to use axes or machetes just to get to the treasure inside! Brazil nuts are one of the best sources of selenium, a mineral that can help boost mood, prevent depression, and fight inflammation in the body. They also contain an antioxidant called ellagic acid, which, in addition to combating inflammation, may help boost brain health. These benefits, in addition to their healthy monounsaturated fats, make Brazil nuts an ideal addition to your summer snack list.

Brogan’s Way Distillery, Richmond: Royal Blood gin, neat Evan Jones, contributor Brogan Carr and her dad Simon quit their jobs to start a gin distillery in Richmond this year – and bless them for doing so. All three of Brogan’s gins are killer, but the Royal Blood (their navy strength) is a big, viscous beast that’s as good by itself as in any cocktail. It’s not often I’ll sip a gin neat but it’s almost a shame to dilute this one. This place is going to feature heavily in my summer.
